A Qatar Airways Boeing 777 aircraft enroute from Washington to Doha diverted into Portuguese military Air Base, Lajes, in the Azores islands, for an emergency landing after heavy turbulence injured passengers. Reports claim that the aircraft had dropped suddenly, causing several passengers to be thrown out of their seats. One passenger suffered heart trouble in the incident. This passenger and two others were hospitalised while several others sustained minor injuries. The remaining passengers were taken to a hotel and were due to continue their flight the next morning.
